Testimony

7589 - David Tate - A Year of Service

This message marks my one-year anniversary of full-time ministry with SONlight.

Exactly one year ago, my wife and I began a new and exciting journey in coming here to SONlight.

I thought that in remembrance I would share a bit of testimony about how the Lord has worked in my life and brought me to serve him here at SONlight full time.

My History (read my bio)
Let me back up a few years first. In 2001 I was a fresh graduate from Houston Baptist University with a degree in Business and Speech Communications. I graduated magna cum laude with a great GPA and a good amount of business experience, but I had the hardest time finding a job.

It was a very stressful time, and it was made even harder because I was engaged to be married only a few short months later. Well, I had a few interviews, but nothing really came through until finally I found a job with a computer company doing phone tech support. That job came at the last moment, I started the Monday before our wedding. Just 5 days before I would need to provide for a wife, who was still in school, the Lord provided a job.

In 2005 though, the Lord really began to make it clear that I would be working at SONlight in the future. I started part time in 2005 as the Technical Director and took care of a lot of the behind the scenes needs here at SONlight for several years.

This was a very difficult time for me as I was working full-time during the day, working evenings at SONlight, and then working evenings and weekends as a wedding photographer to help make ends meet in my families budget. It was hard to work three jobs and still be involved with my three young sons, and serve at church.

We struggled and felt lost. I felt like I was in a dead-end job as I had not gotten promoted or received a substantial raise or anything like that. But the Lord always provided, and He was always in control.

Finally last year, 2009, after we had begun to take some positive steps as a family and really get in tune with what God wanted from us He prepared us for what he had next.

7559 - Do You Believe

Listen, read, and comment

In our study of the First Letter of John we are now in chapter 5. This is one of the most forthright passages in the Bible regarding God’s appeal to people to surrender their will, to accept God’s testimony about His Son Jesus, and by faith receive a new life in a new relationship.

So, today let’s look at 1 John 5, verse 10 which reads, “Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has made about his Son.”

Notice that two groups of people are differentiated clearly in this passage. The first is made up of all those people who have heard and believed God’s testimony about Jesus Christ, his Son.

The second group is comprised by all those people who have heard God’s testimony regarding His Son and then refused to yield their will, all those who stubbornly rejected the message from God. These are the two groups under the spotlight.

7558 - Testimony of God

Listen, read, and comment

Let’s look at 1 John 5:9. It says, “We accept man’s testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.”

To Christians this verse may be superfluous, because to be a Christian we must believe and trust Jesus Christ. Actually, this is an expression of faith in God Himself, since Jesus and God are one.

However, to a seeker or an unbeliever this verse is very important. It examines the plausibility of believing God. To say it another way, “Why should I believe God?”

John starts by reminding the reader that most men accept the testimony of other men. In a court room the testimony of a witness is accepted and believed unless reason to do otherwise is presented.

Under the Old Testament Law a fact of law was established as true by the testimony of two or three witnesses who agreed.

7527 - Personal Testimony

Listen, read, and comment

In 1 John, chapter 4, verse 4, God inspires the apostle John to give a short personal testimony which reads: “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world.”

Keep in mind the concern, which God has for the young church, now about 60 years of age. False teachers have invaded the church bringing false doctrines, which undermine the faith of some believers. So God has called upon the Apostle John, now perhaps approaching age 90, to write. John, who has not previously entered into writing, is called upon to share from the years of his personal relationship with Jesus and the apostles, his personal observations, which would expose and refute these false teachings.

Notice that John uses the word ‘we.’ This calls attention to the fact that all of the apostles have joined together in giving testimony to Jesus the Christ, the Savior sent from God. Remember also that John now joins Peter and Matthew, apostles who have previously given written record regarding Jesus the Christ, Son of God.

7497 - Bethany Kimbell - Preparing for Greece

Listen, read, and comment

An interview with Bethany Kimbell about her testimony of how the Lord reached her as a child growing up in a Christian home. In 8th grade she came to understand that nothing she could do on her own was good enough for God.

The Lord moved in her life and moved from fear of what awaited her in the afterlife into a confidence in Jesus and a thirst to read scripture and follow the Lord. In college she got involved with Campus Crusade for Christ and found a mentor and a strong body of friends.

The Lord has been preparing Bethany for a trip to Athens, Greece to discuss the gospel with Greek students on college campuses. She will be engaging with a group of people who may identify themselves as Christian, but do not have an actual relationship with God.
