7591 - 10,000 Talents

Have you ever considered the magnitude of what the Lord has forgiven in the lives of Christians?

This week I was privileged to enjoy a brief lesson on forgiveness that was presented to the AWANA kids club that I volunteer with. Hearing the lesson, it reminded me of something that I want to share with you today.

The passage we will be considering is from Matthew 18:23-35. It is the parable of two servants who each owe a certain amount of money. This is an intriguing passage that with a little bit of insight becomes an incredible example of forgiveness.

The first servant is brought into the king to settle up his debt with the king. He owes 10,000 talents to the king, but yet after an impassioned plea for mercy and forgiveness, the king forgives the debt.

This same servant then leaves the king and directly goes to another servant who owes him 100 denarii and the servant demands this amount be repaid him. The second servant makes a plea that is nearly identical to the plea the first servant made to the king, but the plea is ignored and the second servant is thrown into prison until the debt could be repaid.

Before we continue to the end of the parable, lets look at what the value is of 10,000 talents and 100 denarii. First of all, a talent is equal to 6000 days wages, and a days wage was 1 denarii, that is, one silver coin.

7589 - David Tate - A Year of Service

This message marks my one-year anniversary of full-time ministry with SONlight.

Exactly one year ago, my wife and I began a new and exciting journey in coming here to SONlight.

I thought that in remembrance I would share a bit of testimony about how the Lord has worked in my life and brought me to serve him here at SONlight full time.

My History (read my bio)
Let me back up a few years first. In 2001 I was a fresh graduate from Houston Baptist University with a degree in Business and Speech Communications. I graduated magna cum laude with a great GPA and a good amount of business experience, but I had the hardest time finding a job.

It was a very stressful time, and it was made even harder because I was engaged to be married only a few short months later. Well, I had a few interviews, but nothing really came through until finally I found a job with a computer company doing phone tech support. That job came at the last moment, I started the Monday before our wedding. Just 5 days before I would need to provide for a wife, who was still in school, the Lord provided a job.

In 2005 though, the Lord really began to make it clear that I would be working at SONlight in the future. I started part time in 2005 as the Technical Director and took care of a lot of the behind the scenes needs here at SONlight for several years.

This was a very difficult time for me as I was working full-time during the day, working evenings at SONlight, and then working evenings and weekends as a wedding photographer to help make ends meet in my families budget. It was hard to work three jobs and still be involved with my three young sons, and serve at church.

We struggled and felt lost. I felt like I was in a dead-end job as I had not gotten promoted or received a substantial raise or anything like that. But the Lord always provided, and He was always in control.

Finally last year, 2009, after we had begun to take some positive steps as a family and really get in tune with what God wanted from us He prepared us for what he had next.

7588 - SONlight Update

Since 1977 SONlight has been sharing the gospel and biblical teaching by radio.

Today we will depart from our usual format of bible studies and interviews to bring you an update on this ministry.

SONlight Overview
SONlight began in January of 1977 with the goal of reaching the many hurting and lost people in the world with the good news of the salvation of Jesus Christ through 60 second radio spots. In each of these radio spots the Gospel is shared through a short conversation between two people. These conversations are about every day life events, and each one shares the need for the salvation of Christ and God’s love for us.

Initially these messages were broadcast on just a handful of stations, but all these years later, these 60-Second SONspot messages are played on nearly 1600 traditional radio stations in English and Spanish. About 85% of the stations are non-christian formats.

We estimate that these Gospel presentations are broadcast through radio waves over half a million times every year. With a combined radio time of over 9000 hours annually. And this does not even consider the thousands of internet radio stations that play our messages, many of them as often as once an hour.

5-Minute SONspot Programs
Over the years we have also had a couple of different formats of longer messages. The program you are listening to now is our longer 5-Minute SONspot program. This program is played on over 60 stations and is comprised of Bible-studies and interviews.

The 5-minute Bible-studies strictly follow scripture and as we are now in Luke, that means that we consider each passage in order without skipping around. Each of these Bible studies are also archived on our website ,sonspots.org, in both audio and text formats in case you might want to listen again, or if you missed a message in the series.

Each of the interviews might be with anyone from a layperson with an inspiring testimony, someone in ministry describing the work they are doing and sharing how the Lord is moving in their area. We try to use this 5-minute program as an opportunity to help these individuals share with a wide audience, what the Lord has placed on their heart.

These two types of messages are played in all 50 US states and in over 20 foreign countries.

7576 - Encouragement for Nigeria

Listen, read, and comment

This message is directed to all of SONlight’s listeners in Nigeria

These 5 Minutes SONspot messages are played in many different states in the United States, and in several foreign countries. Five of our broadcasting stations are in Nigeria, Africa. Even in the city where recent riots and attacks have been happening.

This message is for each of our brothers and sisters in Christ living in Nigeria.

On our way to church recently, my wife and I happened to be listening to the news on the radio. There we first heard of the terrible tragedy that came to our Christian brothers and sisters in Nigeria.

We listened to the reporter tell of the nearly 500 hundred men, women, and children that were attacked and killed for their Christian beliefs. Our hearts mourned to learn of the senseless violence and inhuman treatment of our Christian brothers and sisters. We grieve with you in your losses, and our hearts and voices join with you in prayer.

Here at SONlight we have had the privilege of broadcasting in Nigeria for 14 years, and over those years many letters have blessed us from our dear listeners in Nigeria. Thank you for the encouragement you have given us over the years. And today, I want to do my best to bring you a word of encouragement.

7560 - Fully Guaranteed

Listen, read, and comment

SONlight has the privilege of teaming with many radio stations to air short, positive messages of encouragement to their listening audience. They are distributed in both the English and Spanish languages. The format of these stations vary. Some are middle of the road, others are country, others are contemporary, some are Christian. But each cooperates to share the love and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ with their audience.

The good news about Jesus Christ is guaranteed by the very character of God. By faith, it has been applied to the spirits of men and women, boys and girls; and it has never failed to bring new life, with peace and joy and much more.

7550 - Praise Him for Grace

Listen, read, and comment

Scripture commands that we praise Him. His Word tells us that even so called inanimate things like mountains and trees, sun and stars all praise God.

Revelation 5:11-14 has a most interesting heavenly scene:

"Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!" Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: 'To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!' The four living creatures said, "Amen," and the elders fell down and worshipped."

I want to be included in this great host who are praising our infinite God, and I pray you will be there too. It will be a glorious occasion.

7548 - Born with a Purpose

Listen, read, and comment

Let’s focus on Jesus Chirst as the unique One who was born with a specific and important purpose.

The four gospels are our primary sources for knowledge about the earthly life of Jesus Christ. However, at least three secular historians – Josephus, Tactius and Suetonius – have written of Him, and many historians confirm the historical record of the existence of Jesus and His earthly life and death.

The mission of Jesus on earth was threefold. First, His life was to reveal the nature of the Father to mankind. Second: His reliance and dependence upon the Father demonstrated to Christians the manner in which we are to live – totally dependent upon Jesus Christ who lives within each of us to guide and direct our lives. Third: Jesus came to redeem mankind.

7545 - A New Beginning

Listen, read, and comment

Today marks a new beginning for many people. Let me share a true story and as you listen consider what God can accomplish in a life.

These words are from a story by Paul Deutschman as found in the book Great Stories Remembered, published by Focus on the Family.

Traveling a New York subway I was struck by the features of the passenger on my left. He was probably in his late 30’s, and when he glanced up, his eyes seemed to have a hurt expression in them. He was reading a Hungarian-language newspaper, and something prompted me to say in Hungarian, “I hope you don’t mind if I glance at your paper.”

The man seemed surprised to be addressed in his native language. But he answered politely, “You may read it now. I’ll have time later on.”

During the half-hour ride to town, we had quite a conversation. He said his name was Bela Paskin. A law student when World War II started, he had been put into a German labor battalion, and later he was captured by the Russians and put to work burying the German dead. After the war, he returned to his home in a large city in eastern Hungary.

When he went to the family apartment he found strangers living there. Then he went to the apartment that he and his wife once had. It also was occupied by strangers.

As he was leaving, full of sadness, a boy ran after him calling “Uncle Paskin.” The child was the son of a former neighbor of his. He went to the boy’s home and was told that his wife and whole family was taken by the Nazis to Auschwitz.
Auschwitz was one of the worst Nazi concentration camps. Paskin gave up all hope. Too heartsick to remain any longer in Hungary he managed to immigrate to the United States just three months before I met him.

7542 - Jesus, Son of God

Listen, read, and comment

Lets look in scripture and understand more clearly what the timeline for the existence of Jesus Christ looks like.

Our first mention will be the eternity before the creation started the time clock of humanity. In this distant past the Son of God was present. “In the beginning…the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” [Jn.1:1-2]. Consider also that the night before His crucifixion, Jesus asked the Father to glorify him in the Father’s presence with the glory which he had with the Father before the world began [Jn.17:5]. So the Son of God – the man called Jesus – was a living part of existence long before Creation.

The next link we notice is that the Son of God was the very One who brought creation into being. In Genesis 1:1 it says: “In the beginning God created…” The word ‘God’ here is the Hebrew word ‘Elohim’ which is plural, so the God-head is clearly involved. John’s Gospel [1:3] tells us: “Through [Jesus] all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. Colossians [1:16] says about Jesus; “For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible…all things were created by him and for him.”

7540 - Praise for the Gospel

Listen, read, and comment

In this program we will be reviewing the gospel message together.

We will be breaking this message down into 4 points.

Point one: God desires for you to have a personal, trusting relationship with Him.

Point two: The reason why many people in the world are missing this great relationship.

Point three: Jesus, God’s divine Son, came to earth in the form of man, lived a perfect, sinless life, and paid the penalty for sin on the cross of Calvary.

Point four: Man must again exercise his will and accept the rescue from sin.

If you are already a believer then you have the joy of being able to share the good news with people with whom you rub shoulders.

7529 - God's Desire For Me

Listen, read, and comment

One of the most fateful questions which can be considered in the heart of man is: "What is God's desire for Me?" We often phrase it in ways like, "What does He want me to do? “ or “What does He want from me?"

Let’s us look at five things which God specifically tells us He desires to see in our lives.

7524 - Jesus Christ - Disclosure of God

Listen, read, and comment

Long ago God Himself laid the foundation for man’s life when He designated His only son, Jesus Christ, as the One in whom spiritual life is to be found. He is the figure oft prophesied in the Old Testament by the word Messiah. The one who fulfills these prophecies is found in the New Testament under the term Christ. Both words mean the "Anointed One."

In the coming of Jesus to dwell in the flesh, we have a revelation of God more perfect and glorious than any previous revelation through nature or prophecy. The Incarnation makes it possible for us to know what God is like, not in abstract ideas, but in tangible and understandable form, since the character and attributes of Jesus Christ are manifestations of God himself.

7519 - A Prayer for Our Nation

Listen, read, and comment

Join us as we open God’s Word and look at a prayer which could positively impact any nation.

Men and women who loved and revered God and His Son, Jesus Christ, were influential in founding America. These men and women who risked all, to found a nation where the Lord could be freely worshipped and honored without fear of persecution, scorn or ridicule; gave no apologies for their faith.

Isaac Potts, a Quaker, one day saw General George Washington on his knees at prayer in a grove of trees. Potts later told his wife that God would surely bring a great salvation for America because of godly men and women like Washington.

America has experienced some great highs as a nation; but apathy and spiritual rebellion is eroding the public attitude toward God.

Join with us in a prayer for our nation, which is adapted from Daniel’s prayer for Israel found in Daniel 9:4-19.

7514 - The Purpose of the Bible

Listen, read, and comment

In a recent program we found that man was created for fellowship with God. We then observed that prayer was afforded as the vehicle of communications between God and mankind. Would it not be plausible that God would give an instruction book to his creature, mankind? Today, let’s examine, “What Is The Purpose Of The Bible?”

The major source of information available to man in his quest for understanding of the God who has proposed a meaningful and full life for him, is a collection of sixty-six books bound in one cover, commonly called the Bible. Although people can see the power and wisdom of God in nature, they must trust the Bible for complete truth. Although God has placed within a person's inner being an innate, elementary knowledge of Himself and a hunger for a full relationship, he must seek the full revelation of a holy, omniscient, and omnipotent God within the pages of the book He has given as His unveiling. In order for man to come to understand the marvelous plan God has in mind for the fulfillment of those who are the crowning act of creation, he must seek out facts, attitudes and relationships which God has purposed.

7509 - The Purpose of Prayer

Listen, read, and comment

One thing necessary in any relationship is communications. Prayer is the name given to the process of communication between God and man.

Biblical prayer is communication with God; it is crying out to God out of the depths of the heart; it’s pouring out your soul before God. Believers’ prayer is the inspiring experience of conversing and sharing with God as our loving heavenly Father, our creator. Few experiences so empower and lift Christian to deal with problems.

Prayer may include a dimension of:
• wrestling with God,
• of pleading with God,
• yes, even of fussing with God.

But prayer also includes praise of God,
• of thanking God in appreciation for every facet of his dealing with us,
• and of celebration and joy

7504 - The Pupose of Life

Listen, read, and comment

Men and women of all positions of life are brought to those quiet moments of reflection in which they ask themselves, “What is the purpose of life?” “What am I supposed to accomplish in this life?”

Jesus was able to say to His Father on the night before His crucifixion, “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” (John 17:4).

Our creator, the God of Heaven and earth, had a purpose in mind when He fashioned mankind and breathed into Him the breath of life (Gen 2:7). He says (Psalm 139): "I created you, I knit you together ... You have never been hidden from me. I numbered your days even before you were born. I have known your actions, and your inner thoughts, since you were conceived. Even before you utter a word, I know what you're going to say."

Even though we are limited and He is infinite; even though we are creatures of flesh and He is Spirit; even though we have come out of sin and He is pure and holy; and even though we do not deserve this relationship, God makes it possible out of His grace and mercy.

7502 - Who's in Control

Listen, read, and comment

For a large number of people on earth there is one primary question which haunts their mind: Who’s in control? How many times have you heard someone ask, “Who’s in charge here?” Within the inner drive there is a great desire to know that things are in good hands.

On the spiritual level that same primary question haunts men’s mind for an answer to the meaning of life. In their hearts they are asking: “Who is going to protect my family?”; “Who is going to provide for us?”: Who is going to make us happy?”; or “Who is going to give fulfillment in my life?
God has already answered these questions, if we will but listen to Him. We find in Psalms (138:8): “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me...” and Jeremiah (10:23) states: “I know, O Lord, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps.”

7496 - Following the Fall

Listen, read, and comment

When Adam exercised his volition and ate the forbidden fruit, spiritual death entered the realm of human life. Since ‘the fall’ every person born on earth has faced the reality of spiritual death. There is no escaping this truth. Each person is dead in sin and must be born again if they are to experience spiritual life – to have a personal relationship with the Living God.

Each person must receive new spiritual life as a gift of grace through the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus tasted this death but won the victory over sin and death on the cross of Calvary. Now He offers new life to anyone who will receive it by faith. There is no other source, no other way. Salvation is found only in and through Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12; John 14:7).

Sharing this gospel message is the primary ministry of SONlight. We prepare and send to radio stations short messages – seeds of the good news. These messages are shared in both the English and Spanish languages over about 1650 radio stations. About 85% of these stations have secular formats – country western, middle of the road, rock, all kinds – so we reach many people who never darken the door of a church.

The first thing that come to mind when I hear this expression is the phrase found in Proverbs (1:7, 9:10, and 15:33) and in Psalms (111:10), "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." But what exactly is the fear of the Lord?

7488 - Faith

Listen, read, and comment

A common theme which runs through each of our messages is the necessity for each individual to exercise faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

What is faith? Let me give you an illustration.

You read about a giant sale of new cars. They have some good deals. You are interested so you talk to them. You choose a make and model, color and the accessories you want. They give you a price and assure you they have plenty in stock, but you must act before Saturday. You go home and make arrangements for financing. You scrape together the required down payment. You get a good nights sleep. You have no fear that they'll change the price. You have no fear that they'll change the deal.

Friend, that's faith. Faith in the dealer.

7480 - Entrance Requirements for Heaven

Listen, read, and comment

Students, who desire to enter a particular school, begin by familiarizing themselves with the entry requirements. Only then are they able to determine whether they qualify, or whether they must first pass through some special preparation steps.

A greater quest exists for those who have a desire to gain admission into heaven. The requirements for entrance into heaven are found in the Bible.

Entry requirements into heaven are very high. After all, these are holy environs. Any introduction of evil would destroy the environment of holiness. So, everyone who enters must qualify according to the righteous standards of Almighty God. A person must be pure. They must be holy and blameless. They must be without blemish and without fault. In fact they must be perfect (Mt 5:8; Col 1:22; 1 Thes 3:13; Heb 10:10,14; Jude 24).

Anyone seeking entry with any less credentials would be quickly rebuffed and sent away, because such entry would be an unacceptable affront to God’s pure and holy nature.

7478 - Heaven For Sure

Listen, read, and comment

On the night before the crucifixion Jesus said to those gathered with Him (John 14:2-3 kj):

“In my Father’s house are many mansions; If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

This is the passage most often used to give assurance to each believer that they will enjoy unbroken fellowship with our Lord — and of course, each other — throughout eternity.

Listen to this SONlight spot which illustrates how Christians delight in looking forward to entering Heaven.

John 1:31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
John 1:32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
John 1:33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, `The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
