May 21, 2010
An Interview with Richard Cook, a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church and the work that he is doing with the United Methodist Men ministering to injured veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
He shares about his Christian upbringing, but he acknowledges that he was not deeply connected to Christ until he was an adult. A visit to Bible study got his attention as he was confronted by a group of passionate Godly men. Since that point his commitment to growing has been more consistent.
He shares that, “Sometimes God puts things in front of you that you may not be comfortable with.”

May 14, 2010
Another interview with Dr. Rodney Woo, the departing pastor of Wilcrest Baptist Church and the new pastor of the International Baptist Church in Singapore.
Rodney shares about his 18 years as the pastor of Wilcrest Baptist Church, where the church mission statement is “Wilcrest Baptist Church is God’s multi-ethnic bridge that draws all people to Jesus Christ, who transforms them from unbelievers to missionaries!”
This church focus on transforming members to missionaries is church-wide, and now the Lord’s calling to missions has been extended to Rodney as he will be moving with his family to Singapore. There he will be the pastor of another multi-cultural church in an area of the world in great need of evangelism.

Rodney shares about the excitement the church has in his following the Lord’s call in his life, and that they are sending their very best out as a missionary. The big thing that Rodney is praying for is that Wilcrest Baptist Church will stay focused on their calling and that their focus would be centered on Christ as the head of the church rather than the pastor.

7562 - David Johnson - Churches in West Africa
February 10, 2010
Listen, read, and comment
An interview with David Johnson, part of the IMB Engagement Team in West Africa, where he works in recruiting coordinating churches to come to the mission field in West Africa.David has helped survey the West African people groups. It is the 2nd most ethnically diverse region in the world, and there are 1600 different people groups in the West Africa region with 1100 languages.
He shares that a challenge for the IMB is that to make the best use of the limited resources, they can only send individual missionaries to people groups that are more than 100,000 in population. And in the West Africa region more than 79% of the people groups are under 100,000 in population. Because of their small size, the IMB just does not have the resources to reach these micro people-groups
David works from West Africa, researching, surveying, and finding out what kind of Christian presence and influence is in an area, so that the churches that are going to West Africa can have the best knowledge in what where they will be going, and who they will be talking to. Then the churches will get thorough training in the US and in Africa, with the same training and resources as IMB missionaries..
Lastly, David shares an exciting story about one particular churches experience in sharing the gospel with the chief of a village.

She shares how she and her husband Scott have created a Christian foundation of discipline and love for their children.
She currently teaches math and science to middle school children, and although the faculty and staff are Christian, the students themselves are from a variety of primarily non-Christian backgrounds. Many of the students may come from all over the world; former communist countries, embassy employees, mafia members and other international businesses.
Outside of the classroom, Robin and Scott are reaching out to other Bulgarian people, and Robin shares briefly about the interactions with two local adults.
Only about 1% of the population of Bulgaria claim to be of an evangelical faith, and Robin and her husband are working hard to reach to more of the Bulgarian people. 7533 - Jamie Johns - The End of Myself
December 04, 2009
Listen, read, and comment
An interview with Dr. Jamie Johns, Associate Professor and Director of Biblical Languages at Houston Baptist University and Adjunct Professor of Biblical Studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also founder and director of Hamoreh, a ministry to reach out to eastern Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Johns shares how the Lord changed his life from a proud and self-sure atheist, and brought him to salvation.
He shares that he was saved in October of 1987 after going through a couple of difficult ordeals with the death of his father and his wife’s struggle to recover from a very serious car accident. During this tramatic period of his life he began to search for something bigger than himself. He read the writings of Ghandi and Martin Luther King, and admired what he saw in their lives.
But it was not until he was confronted by the awareness of his wife’s salvation, the faith of her family, and the intervention of her family’s pastor over two and half years that he began to give Christianity any consideration. This pastor shared that Jesus’s love for us has nothing to do with ourselves, but has everything to do with who He is.
This was a difficult time for Jamie, and he shares that, “He (God) found me when I was finished with my own self. When I was at the neediest point.”
During the nearly three years that he was processing all of this with people who loved him, and all the while searching for answers to the big questions. And then finally he came to realize that, “Jesus just loves. It is free, it is full, and I needed to just get all of my stuff out of the way and receive that. That is where God met me, when I was at the end of myself.”

An interview with Dr. Jamie Johns, Associate Professor and Director of Biblical Languages at Houston Baptist University and Adjunct Professor of Biblical Studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Dr. Johns discusses what is on his heart after another three month trip to Africa with HaMoreh Ministries, the ministry that he and his wife Mimi founded in 2005 to reach out to eastern Sub-Saharan Africa. Their goal is to preach, save, and disciple future leaders and pastors in an area of the world that is hungry and thirsty for the good news of Jesus.
Jamie shares that in an area of the world that is struggling in so many physical ways, there is a body of believers that is flourishing in Christ.
“I am deeply convicted, and deeply encouraged by the kind of Christianity I see growing in East Africa. A joyous expression of deep faith in awful circumstances...”
We discuss the differences in faith present in Africa and in the United States. Jamie describes a level of faith that is deeper in Africa in the people he is working with, than with the culture he sees in the US. He traces much of the differences in faith to the Enlightenment period in western civilization.

7512 - Rick Leatherwood - Story Telling
October 16, 2009
Listen, read, and comment
An interview with Rick Leatherwood about his work in Liberia using “story telling” to spread the gospel among the local population.Rick and his wife have been on the mission field for 25 years, and Rick shares that one of the great needs on the mission field is that many of the unreached people of the world are not literate, and thus are unable to read the Bible in their language. Rick is working through using oral teaching with a society full of illiterate people accustomed to learning orally.
In Liberia there are 16 different people groups with 16 different languages. Perhaps 2% were reading 40-50 years ago, but even after many literacy programs in Liberia over those years, the current literacy rates have only risen to about 5%.
The four main principles in story telling are:
• the story must be biblical with no additions or preaching
• telling the complete story - no stopping to provide explanation, so as not to confuse the listener.
• the story must be in the “heart language” in order to really deeply speak to people’s hearts
• the story must be short enough to be reproducible and spread from person to person
Workshops are run to teach pastors and leaders these stories, so that they can in turn share the stories with others. This enables these Christians to share these stories from the Word of God with others, thus spreading the true message.

These poor literacy rates have brought significant challenges on the field, and of the solutions that is being utilized, is the embracing of the oral-traditions of these people groups. Rick is currently working towards writing and translating 60 stories from creation to the return of Christ into these languages as an “oral bible”.
These stories are used in conjunction with a Saber hand wound digital player to present these audio stories in the listeners “heart language”
