We are presently studying in Luke 21. In this chapter we find Jesus giving the disciples an overview of some future history of Israel and the world.

The passage for study today tells us about the Lord’s return to earth in majesty to set up his glorious kingdom. Listen to Luke 21:25-28:

"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

In previous verses Jesus has given a list of events, which will occur prior to the end of the present order of things.

Now he gets specific. The heavenly bodies — the sun, moon and stars, will be used by God to send a message of coming events.

On the earth, tension will be high because the waters of the seas will be roaring and tossing in unusual ways.

These events could coincide with events described in 1 Thessalonians (4:16-17) regarding what most scholars call the rapture of the church. This scene opens with the trumpet call of God, and the voice of the archangel accompanying the Lord’s coming in the heavens to call the believers from the earth. Those whose bodies are in a grave will come out of the grave and rise up in the air to be united with their spirit and soul. At the same time those believers who are alive will levitate and we will all join together in rising to meet the Lord in the air.

As all the godly saints depart the earth, it is left populated with unbelievers.

Or, these events of Luke 21 may follow those of 1 Thessalonians in sequence of time. As God continues his work in the heavenlies the anguish within people will be so high that some people will faint because of the apprehension of what is happening in the universe. God will even shake the heavenly bodies such as they have never experienced before.

All of this display will be God’s announcement of the return of his Son to the domain of earth.

We are aware of what consternation comes upon the media and the people of the world when a comet is approaching the earth in its orbit. If it is a rarity, these people get all upset and tense about a catastrophe being caused on the world by the attraction of the comet, and some even get hyper that it may collide with the earth.

In light of these previews and the excitement about this type of phenomena, just imagine the confusion, which will come upon the people of the world when God begins to play games with the heavenly bodies over that extended period of time.

The consummation of events will be the appearance of the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, coming in a cloud using and controlling the great, awesome power of God to traverse the space of the universe as easily as we take a trip to the grocery store.

What great encouragement is given as Jesus tells the disciples that when these things begin to take place, every believer alive should stand up and lift our sight to observe the coming of the One who brings final redemption, who is near and coming fast.

How could these disciples have fully understood all that Jesus was saying? They were already having trouble understanding what Jesus was telling them regarding the here-and-now in Jerusalem. Later, before his ascension, Jesus empowers their minds to understand the Scripture (Lk. 24:45)

I thank the Lord that he is the one who guides and directs his children. He gives us discernment to understand the deep truths he has for us. He is so great.

Praise God he has given us the announcement regarding end time events. We must rely upon him to keep us straight. I’m looking forward, with all my brothers and sisters, to the Lord’s kingdom.
