As Jesus taught the crowd one day he talked about the eye being the lamp of our body. Let’s explore this truth today.

First, let me read Luke 11: 33-36:

Luke 11:33 "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.

Luke 11:34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness.

Luke 11:35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.

Luke 11:36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you."
Jesus emphasizes more than once that no thinking person would light a lamp and then hide it away under a bucket, or in a closet, because the purpose of light is to enhance sight. Light helps people to see more clearly, and often prevents people from falling and breaking bones or causing pain.

One truth involved in this passage is that Jesus is the light of the world.

Focus on the principal point, which Jesus spoke here, “your eye is the lamp of your body.” Link this to the teaching of Jesus, that a man’s inner self, his ‘heart’ is the source of the speech and actions of life. From the heart flows the external manifestation of life.

Jesus is calling the people to recognize that their inner being, their ‘heart’, their soul & spirit, is in great need of the light of life –– Jesus Christ.
As the lamp of the body the eye radiates into the heart the light needed to keep a person from walking in darkness. The eye, as the lamp, brings illumination to keep a person from stumbling or falling spiritually and morally in life.

Jesus said, “See to it then, that the light within you is not darkness. Our inner being must enjoy radiant spiritual light to be able to make the decisions so critical each day. That spiritual light will illuminate us to the lies and deception of Satan with which he seeks to defeat us.

This light keeps us spiritually in tune with the indwelling Lord and His Spirit who lives within and through us to accomplish His work here in a dark world. That light will radiate God’s love, joy and peace out through us to bring hope and direction to guide many souls lost in darkness.

The light needed to walk spiritually and morally upright is not the light outside the body, which the eye picks up. No! We can be in a dark world and have the brightest lighthouse beam shining from deep within our heart out through our eyes to bring the light of life to the masses of people around us.

Jesus was on earth to share the truth that He was the only eternal, radiant light which was capable and able to serve as the light to light up a dark world.

The emphasis here is on the eye. Is it properly focused to permit the light of Christ to fill our inner being? Or is it out of shape with near-sightedness, where our focus is selfishness and independence? Such focus scatters and diffuses the light so that it does not serve the intended purpose.

It might be that our eyes are clouded by worldly things like pleasure and lust. Such condition of the spiritual eyes would keep the light from illuminating our path, which Jesus has for us to tread.

Get the picture? First the spiritual eye must focus eternal truth upon the internal being. Then light abounds to enable us to walk hand in hand in obedience to the Lord, always equipped and empowered to accomplish His purpose of “letting our light shine before men, that they may see our good deeds and give praise and glory to the Father” who gives the light in the first place (Matt. 5:16).
