7561 - Eternal Life

Audio transcript

We have profited so far in our study of 1 John. The early part of chapter 5 talks about the testimony God has given to mankind. In the Bible we see that God has given consistent and varied witness to all men about His nature, and His love and grace, which He has poured out upon mankind.

Psalms 19, verses1-4 tell us:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”

And in Romans 1 verses19-20 we read:
“What may be known about God is plain to [all men], because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities –– his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”

This witness by God through creation is available to every man, woman and child upon the face of the earth. However, many people have closed their mind to this witness, and seek to explain creation in terms of the intellect. The Romans passage goes on to tell us that man’s objects of idolatry are the results of ignoring or rejecting this close, pervasive testimony of God.

In John 3:16 John tells us about the all encompassing love of God with these words; “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Many other verses from God’s Word could be brought forth which tell how very carefully and persistently God has shared with his creature called man so that they could have some comprehension of the character and nature of God; and so that they could know about God’s provision for their rescue from their bondage to sin; and how God has provided for their reconciliation to himself through Jesus Christ.

But the highest expression has been His testimony regarding His Son Jesus Christ. It is only through Jesus that anyone may have peace with God.

Listen to 1 John 5:11-12
“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

Notice the facts. God has given us eternal life. It’s a gift. We can’t buy it. Neither can we earn it. As with any gift, for it to become personally ours it must be received. Jesus is waiting for each one to invite Him to come into their life as Lord and Savior. When you ask, He does what He promised - he enters your being to give you a new life, which includes all His blessings, like peace and joy and love, and much more.

Notice also this life is available only in Jesus. There is no other source. As we said, to receive it you must deal with Jesus. Then He becomes a permanent resident within your inner being. He’s promised He will never leave you.

The last phrase in 1 John 5:12 is sad: “he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” This proclaims that unbelievers do not have life. The word from which ‘life’ comes means a life of value and meaning through a dynamic relationship with Jesus. These unbelievers do have eternal existence. They will exist forever, but the Bible declares this existence to be the ‘second death’ as they will suffer torment throughout eternity.

Just think, people are not sent to hell. They get there by their own choice - by rejecting Jesus. Which choice will you make?
