7532 - God Lives Within

Audio transcript

Today let’s consider the statement that “God lives within us.”

Our consideration of this truth that God lives within each Christian comes from our study of 1 John, chapter 4, verse 15: “If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in Him and he in God.”

The statement that Jesus is the Son of God is a bold statement. Yet, declaring this truth, according to this verse, testifies that God dwells within that person, and that person dwells in God.

This is an underlying theme of the book of 1 John. The apostle John, writing under the inspiration of God begins this epistle with a declaration about the Father God and His Son Jesus Christ, and has throughout this book continued to press the issue that Jesus is the Christ and He truly is the Son of God. At least nineteen times direct or indirect reference is made to the Son of God in this letter and He is identified as Jesus.

John is making this defense of the deity of Jesus because of the many false teachers who were denying this basic truth; and this heresy continues even today.

But if a person, out of faith, speaks with his lips the doctrine that Jesus is the Son of God, indicating a heart conviction and agreement with God about this truth, then there is certainty that God lives in him and he abides in God.

That same truth is emphasized numerous times. For example in 2 Corinthians 6 (v16) we are told: “...we are the temple of the living God...”
Again, in Philippians 2:13 we read: “For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.”

In 1 Corinthians 3:16 it says: “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in You?” This verse also tells us that God’s Spirit, the third member of the Trinity, lives in believers.

Most Christians have said at times that Jesus lives in them. We need to have no doubt regarding this truth about Jesus, who is identified as a member of the Trinity. He is clearly declared in the Scriptures to be a resident within every Christian.

Colossians 1:27 tells us that: “God has made know...the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” This is a mystery to contemplate, but it’s true. Christ lives in us!

This truth is affirmed in Galatians 2:20 by saying: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me... Christ lives in each Christian.

So let’s accept the truth that God the Son, Jesus Christ, lives in us as the Scripture declares.

It cannot be refuted that by whatever title or name He is identified, Trinity God lives in every Christian. We may be bold to say that by every title He uses: God the Father, God the Son, Christ, God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, or God, that Trinity God lives within believers.

For what purpose does God live within us? 2 Thessalonians 1, verses 11 and 12 give farther insight. I read: “...that by His power He may fulfill every act prompted by your faith...so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

You see, God lives in us to prompt us to obey, and to accomplish those good deeds, which He has in mind to do through us.

Oh friend, in God’s marvelous grace, He planned to live within His children so that both He and we may enjoy intimate, personal fellowship; and also to empower us and use us to bring glory to His own dear name. So we have the privilege of being His instrument to reach into this darkened world and rescue those who are lost.
