Audio transcript

Join us as we open God’s Word today and look at a prayer which could positively impact any nation.

Men and women who loved and revered God and His Son, Jesus Christ, were influential in founding America. These men and women who risked all, to found a nation where the Lord could be freely worshipped and honored without fear of persecution, scorn or ridicule; gave no apologies for their faith.

Isaac Potts, a Quaker, one day saw General George Washington on his knees at prayer in a grove of trees. Potts later told his wife that God would surely bring a great salvation for America because of godly men and women like Washington.

America has experienced some great highs as a nation; but apathy and spiritual rebellion is eroding the public attitude toward God.

Join with us in a prayer for our nation, which is adapted from Daniel’s prayer for Israel found in Daniel 9:4-19.

“O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with all who love him and obey his commands, we have sinned and done wrong. We have been complacent and negligent in upholding your Word; we have turned away from your commands and laws. We have not listened to your warnings spoken in your name to our president, our political leaders, our judges, or to all the people of the land.

“Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame —the men of this nation and leaders in our capital and in all America, both near and far, in all the states and counties where we have been unfaithful to you.

O LORD, we and our political leaders, our judges and our people are covered with shame because we have sinned against you.

“The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; we have not obeyed the LORD our God or kept the laws he gave us. All America has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you.

“Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of God, are being poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our leaders by bringing upon us great natural disasters, besetting illnesses, division and uncertainty. Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done in the U.S.A. Just as it is written in the Bible, all these disasters have come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth. The LORD did not hesitate to bring disaster upon us, for the LORD our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him.

“Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people to this land with a mighty hand to found one nation under God who would honor your name and obey your commands, we have sinned, we have done wrong. O Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from this nation. Our sins and the iniquities of our people have made America and your people an object of scorn to many in the world.

“Now, O God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servants. For your sake, O Lord, look with favor on your people. Give ear, O God, and hear; open your eyes and see the deterioration of the moral climate in this nation. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your sake, O my God, do not delay, because your people who bear your Name ask for you to purify your people and exalt your name once again in this land.”
