7511 - From the World

Audio transcript

We are engrossed in a close study of the first letter of the Apostle John.

Let me read 1 John 4, verses 5 and 6 and notice the contrast:

“They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.”

Today lets focus on verse 5, which vividly gives truth about those who have not yielded to the Lord Jesus Christ. They have refused to embrace the truth in order to be saved from death and darkness, and to receive light and life.

Notice this insight into the life of the unbeliever is contrasted in verse 6 with a glimpse into the life of a person who is from God – one of God’s children.

But in verse 5 we return to those who are identified by the word “them.” This reference looks back to those in verses 1, 3 and 4 who are controlled and dominated by the spirit of antichrist – those who are against Christ.

Listen to that verse again: “They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.”

Did you notice that the word “world” is used three times in that short verse? What truth is being emphasized in this passage?

As has been true throughout this book of 1 John, we see again the stark contrast of the two systems so prevalent in the world: the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of the World. The Kingdom of the World is the emphasis here.

Their heart gives allegiance to the one who rules over the World System. Who is he? It is Satan himself, the archangel who is described in Ezekiel 28 as the one who was the model of perfection, full of wisdom. This heavenly being was anointed as a guardian cherub by God Himself, and he walked blamelessly until the time when wickedness or iniquity was found in him. The description continues as it says “your heart became proud and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor.”

Can you imagine a more honored being, other than God himself? Isaiah (14:13f) adds to that description as he writes about how this one who said in his heart “I will raise my throne above the stars of God... I will make myself like the Most High.”

This is the fallen one who rules over the whole world (1 John 5:19). And unbelievers are from this mindset. They have attitudes, which predetermine their responses and actions in regard to Christ.

We next see the result, which is produced in their life because of the fact that they are from the world – they speak from the viewpoint of the world. We might put it this way: those card-carrying members of the world system will preach and parrot the party line, and the party line is antichrist. They stand in open opposition to Christ. They will proclaim the view of the independence of man, and will recognize no authority over them.

One last insight is given in this verse. It says that the world listens to them. Those who are deceived by Satan and his evil spirits will not tolerate another doctrine being proclaimed. They will resist with the tools of their realm – violence, defiance, defamation, attack; but to those who voice the party line they will listen and agree. They will join together with choruses of shouts to drown out the opposition.

The mental picture might be like an old film clip of Nazi Youth, shoulder to shoulder in a Berlin square shouting approval to the words of their leader - Hitler.

Of course, the opposition for them are those who are in the Kingdom of God; those who offer hope and light and life. We will look at them in verse 6 in our next study together. Oh friend, I pray that you belong to God’s family. With open arms He invites all who will to come.
