Friend, isn’t it great how the Word of God blesses our spirit with such joy at times?

In our study of 1 John we now are in 1 John 3:24. Today we want to focus upon only the first sentence, which reads:

“Those who obey his commands live in Him...”

Here we notice again that we are given proof that we have life in Trinity God. The proof given here is the fruit of obedience to God’s principles as found in His Word.

In the book of 1 John we are given three different proof points of our living relationship with the Lord.

The first proof that we have life in God and that He lives in us is that we desire to obey, and that our lifestyle will habitually show this to be a reality. Now, we are not saying that a Christian may become sinlessly perfect. There will be those gut-wrenching disappointments when we stumble by sinning. Then we must repent and confess and get squared away with God again. But we never lose our personal relationship with the Lord. But the consistency of our lifestyle of joyful obedience to our Father and Lord bears testimony that we are truly His child.

A second proof-point of the reality of our living life in God is our sacrificial love for the brothers. This is the work of the Holy Spirit in our life. He is the one who brings the love of God into our life and keeps it bubbling up to flow through us out to others. We’re just the pipeline.

The third proof-point in 1 John of a living relationship with God is the evidence that the Holy Spirit actually lives within us.

Friend, you will see all three of these are specified in verses 23 and 24 of chapter 3.

The desire of John, and of the author God, is that believers may be alerted to looks for those proofs in their life. God wants His children to know that they know Him. He wants us to be assured and have no doubt about the eternal future.

How do we receive this assurance? We know that we have a vital living relationship with God when we repeatedly see these proof-points displayed in our life. Anytime you observe one of the tell-tale proof-points in your life it is usually followed by a deep joy, because your heart bears testimony that you belong to God.

Now, let’s look briefly at that point of obedience. The passage says, “Those who obey his commands live in Him.”

Someone might ask, “Isn’t that being legalistic?” Good question. The answer is given by Jesus. He conveyed the truth that He did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets, but to fulfill them. He went on to explain that when men and women try to do good things through their own strength, in order to please men, then their reward is received from the people they please. There is no long-term eternal reward although what was done may be good.

The deep truth is that man does not carry out God’s work by his own effort. No! It is God himself who brings these good things to pass. A Christian may find that they reach out to help a needy person –– an elderly widow who may need help with packages and you instantly respond. That’s God!

John 3:21 says, “But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

Matt. 5:16 says, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” It’s God who works in and through us.

Oh friend, may we be available to God so He may use us to accomplish His work.
