Friend, it’s always a joy to have an opportunity to discuss God’s Word together.

Today we want to discuss how love was demonstrated to those on earth by God.

Let me read 1 John 3:16 and then we can explore the idea.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.”

God is a loving God. He is patient & long-suffering with His creatures. You see, God created men & women in order that there could be a mutual loving, pleasing relationship between them. People would certainly benefit by coming under the authority of God. They would experience His protection, guidance and steadfast love. God would be pleased by the praise and delight which men and women, boys and girls would choose to express toward Him.

The love which God has evidenced for people has been evidenced throughout centuries; yet, many throughout history have chosen to be independent from God. They have rejected His authority, turned away from His love and chosen to go their own stubborn way.

But God knew all this even before Adam was created. So out of His great love for us God formulated a plan whereby these sinful, independent people could return to Him and find forgiveness and cleansing, and be reconciled to Him.

1 Peter (1:20) tells us that Jesus Christ, God’s Son, was chosen in the counsels of heaven to become the redeeming sacrifice for mankind even before the creation of the world.

In Isaiah 53 we have the prophesy of the suffering Savior who would be despised & rejected by men. He would take upon himself our sins and sorrows. He would be pierced for our transgressions. The punishment that brought us peace was laid upon Him. He was oppressed and afflicted yet, He did not open His mouth. (Isaiah 63:9) “In His love & mercy He redeemed us.”

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

This is how we know what love is! Jesus Christ laid down his life for us, showing true love.

Friend, the life of Jesus Christ was willingly laid down of his own accord (John 10:18).” Yes, it is true that rough, cruel hands nailed Jesus to the cross, planted it in the ground; and then the crowd mocked and taunted him as he hung on that cross, but Jesus could have called an army of angels to His defense.

There on that rough timber cross Jesus experienced the weight of the collective sins of all people born on earth, as they were placed upon him. The horror of this hour was such that the sun was darkened for three hours. Fellowship was broken between the Father and His Son Jesus. Jesus willingly bore these sins in our place. Listen, that’s what love looks like. That’s love demonstrated!

Love of the Father gave his Son. Love of the Son endured the pain, agony and humiliation of life and death as a human in our place.

But God’s love goes on. Romans (1:4) tells us that Jesus Christ our Lord, through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead.

Jesus lives! And he offers eternal life to anyone who will ask Him to be Lord of their life. Then Jesus enters that life to bring joy and peace, righteousness and holiness. And this life continues throughout eternity. Don’t delay. Ask Him now.
