7489 - I Am the Way, Truth and the Life

Audio transcript

In our series of Bible studies of the seven "I Am" statements made by Jesus in the Gospel of John, we have now come to the sixth statement--I am, the way, the truth and the life.

The night before His crucifixion Jesus was with His disciples preparing them for His departure and encouraging them about the future. Keep in mind, Jesus fully intended to leave the work of the Kingdom in the hand of these eleven apostles. He knew what was ahead--He would be betrayed and crucified. These apostles would be scattered and desert him under the pressure. And Peter would deny Him.

Yet, He did not flinch. You see, He also knew that He would send the Holy Spirit to strengthen and empower them. He knew their fear and timidity would be superseded by boldness and power--even to the point of working miracles as a sign for unbelievers.

Chapter 14 of the Gospel of John opens with Jesus comforting them by telling them He was going away to prepare a place for them. The implication is that place would be in heaven since He referred to His Father's house. He clearly tells them He will come back and take them to be with Him.

Listen to verses 4-6:
“You know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'”

This conversation focuses upon the lack of understanding of the disciples regarding spiritual matters. Jesus has been referring to His trip back to heaven to be with the Father, where He would fix them a place.

Thomas reveals that he did not even know where Jesus was going. Did he think Jesus was taking a trip to some other place on earth? Did he comprehend that there is a vast unseen realm from which Jesus came and to which he was returning? Thomas voices the bewilderment of the group. "We don't even know where you are going." If he didn't know where Jesus was going, how could he know the path to take to get there?
Jesus responds with a somewhat mysterious answer--"I am the way and the truth and the life." Disciples, if you really know me then you have the road map to heaven. The way to heaven is a spiritual matter. You do not plan for this trip by getting a map and compass, and a trip plan from AAA. Jesus is the road, the path, the way. Get to know Him.

Jesus also said, (Jn 8:32), "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

If you know and follow Jesus, the Truth, then you will be set free from slavery to sin.

Notice that all three points of this short sentence are absolutes--the way, truth and life. Either you have them or you do not. It is impossible to be one-half of truth, or to have a fraction of life, or a percent of the way.

If you have a trusting, faith relationship with Jesus then you have life (abundant life), you have truth (the absolute truth) and you know the way to heaven where fellowship with the Trinity will be eternal bliss.

Some people accuse Christians of being narrow minded regarding these matters. Friends, Christians did not make the rules for this game. They are laid out in God's Word. They must accuse God of being narrow minded.

I'm sure He would agree because Jesus told the crowd who heard the sermon on the mount (Matt 7:13-14), “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

Let me call your attention to the end of this matter from Jesus own lips. He said, "No one comes to the Father except through me." See, it is a narrow way, but no one is excluded who places their faith in Jesus Christ and lives obediently by His words.

This principle is echoed in Acts (4:12) - Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

Oh friend, the Word says (1 John 1:2) "The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us."

Heed His Word. Accept His invitation to come to Him. Follow The Way and you will know The Truth and you will have The Life!
