We’re so glad you have joined us today for a study in God’s Word.

In our study of 1 John we are now in chapter two, verse 15-16. There is a warning message for Christians in these two verses.

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world --the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does --comes not from the Father but from the world.”

In these verses John gives us one of the most instructive & honest appraisals of the world system as any in the Bible.

The word ‘world’ in these verses is from the Greek word ‘Kosmos.’ Kosmos refers to the world system and not to the earth planet. Over this system the evil one, named Satan, rules as the head. His fallen angels and demonic spirits are his agents who carry out his mission of deceit in opposition to the Heavenly kingdom. Those who have not humbled themselves and have refused to exercise faith in the work & person of Jesus Christ are his subjects.

Do not misunderstand, religion has a large place of influence in the kingdom of the world, but each of their religious practices reject the truth of God. These people have established their own system of works by which they seek to please God; but the Bible repeatedly declares that they all fail.
To grasp the scope of this discussion keep in mind that two systems are present around us.

The Kingdom of God is present along with the Triune God and all His children who temporarily reside on this planet. God places within every child born on earth an intuitive software package with a desire to know Him. If this is honored and followed then they will come to faith in Jesus and become members of God’s Kingdom – the Heavenly Kingdom.

The opposing kingdom is the world kingdom which we are reviewing today.

These two kingdoms exist side by side on earth. They both are eternal. One – the world system – exists in eternal death, pain and agony, under their leader Satan.

The other – the Heavenly Kingdom – exists in eternal life, peace and joy led by the Sovereign God.

Now, let’s notice the specific true statements God gives us about the world system.

It says plainly that everything in this world system is anti-God.

Three specifics are listed about the world system. First: the cravings of sinful man. In the King James this reads “the lust of the flesh.” This refers to the passionate desire or craving which comes from the lower, evil nature. The physical body itself does not have evil desires. Those evil desires are generated and come from the fallen, depraved human nature.

The second specific is: “the lust of the eyes.” These strong, evil desires also generate and come from the lower nature; but these are first stimulated by the eye gate. They see and then they covet; thus, they enter into any evil to fulfill their strong desire.

The third specific is: “the boasting of what he has and does.” This sinful, evil attitude and following action relates to the human pride. The picture is of swaggering about in pride for the earthly glory one perceives he has accomplished. You can quickly see that this clashes with God’s truth regarding His leadership, guidance and provision in the life of every human being.

Notice this passage tells us that anyone who is enamored with the bells and whistles, the trinkets and vainglory of the world cannot possibly have that divinely supplied love which separates believers from unbelievers. God’s sacrificial love is diametrically opposed to the love of the world. They cannot be possessed in the same human heart.

Friend, God warns us to avoid any love for the world system.
