6994 - Creator - John 1:3

We are now engaged in a study of the gospel of John.

Interestingly, John opens his gospel with some timeless declarations. We previously talked about the pre-existence of the Son of God, and John’s identification of him as “the Word”.

John 1:3 says:
“Through him all things were made; and without him nothing was made that has been made.”

In the study of this verse we’ll look at some Scriptures relating to the subject of creation.

Many different theories have been put forth by scientist and people regarding how God created the heavens and the earth. Some try to bend and twist what the Bible says to conform to their own thoughts and ideas. These kinds of compromises cast question upon God given Scripture. No one has ever verified that there is error in the Scripture.

Noted scientist Duane Gish states: “’In the beginning God created…’ is still the most up-to-date statement that can be made about origins.”

The verse for study today plainly states that through him all created things were made. This is talking about original creation of everything that has dimension and weight, and which exists in time. All matter is included.

It proceeds so emphatically by refuting that anyone else made anything that qualifies as matter.

It may help our understanding to know that in Genesis 1:1, we are told: “In the beginning God created…” The Hebrew word for God is “Elohim” which is plural in nature. This is one reason many scholars believe that Trinity God was involved in the process of creation. Some say that God the Father planned the entire process; then God the Son executed the plan and brought it into being; and that God the Holy Spirit watches over the entire creation. Thus, we see that God gets credit from beginning to the end.

One aspect which many scientist have wrestled with is the time factor. Since the Word of God has proven to be reliable over and over, why should we doubt the truth which God passed on to mankind about the details.

In the Genesis record, the Hebrew word for day is the word ‘yom’. In all cases where ‘yom’ stands by itself it means a twenty-four period. In some cases ‘yom’ is modified to indicate another meaning, such as “the day of the Lord.” However, in every instance in the creation record ‘yom’ stands for twenty-four hours.

In some cases the difficulty arises from the lack of faith in the doubter to believe that God is omnipotent and can perform such miraculous deeds and achievements.
Someone may ask for other evidence of the creator. Actually many verses give credit to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as the one who carried out creation. Let’s look at some of these.

Colossians 1:6 says: “For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible…”

We find In Hebrews 1:2: “[God] … has spoken to us by his Son… through whom he made the universe.”

In Hebrews 1:10 we read: “In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.”

Hebrews 11:3 adds: “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” This verse emphasizes that all creation was made from nothing which previously existed.

Other Scripture adds to these. It should be evident that God was the creator.
